If you have searches saved or alerts set up using this database these changes may affect your search strategy.  It therefore may be useful to review your searches on an annual basis to check that they still run properly.  Are your subject headings still recognised and/or are there new terms that could be added?

This year’s update has now been completed with 454 new MeSH Headings were added to MeSH in 2012. A further  57 existing MeSH Headings were either changed or deleted and replaced with more up-to-date terminology.  Click on the links to see if any apply to you.

If you would like further information, the NLM Technical Bulletin traditionally includes information about changes made to MEDLINE during annual National Library of Medicine maintenance known as Year-End Processing (YEP). This bulletin collects, in one place, the notable data changes for 2012.

To access this (and other journals) go the NHS Evidence My Journals service, login with your Athens username and password via the link at the top right hand side of the screen and then search for Lancet  using the search box. You will see a link directing you through to the journal.

• Ankylosing spondylitis, Dyspepsia – proven GORD, Dyspepsia – proven non-ulcer, Dyspepsia – proven peptic ulcer, Dyspepsia – unidentified cause, Osteoarthritis, and Stroke and TIA have been updated to include:
  • Information about a possible interaction between pantoprazole and warfarin from the manufacturer’s SPC.
  • Information about the potentially serious interaction between proton pump inhibitors and protease inhibitors (atazanavir and saquinavir) from the BNF.
• Bipolar disorder and Schizophrenia have been updated to include relevant information from the MHRA about a risk of extra-pyramidal effects or withdrawal symptoms (or both) in newborns after maternal use of anti-psychotics during the third trimester of pregnancy has been added to this topic.
• Dementia has been updated to include prescribing information for memantine, and the Basis of Recommendation has been updated to reflect the most recent considerations of the NICE regarding memantine.
• Depression and Menopause have been updated to include:
  • Updated information from the manufacturer’s SPC that venlafaxine may alter glycaemic control in people with diabetes mellitus.
  • Information on new maximum doses, adverse effects, and drug interactions for citalopram and escitalopram following the publication of new safety data regarding the association of with dose-dependent QT interval prolongation by Lundbeck Ltd, in collaboration with the MHRA.
• Depression – antenatal and postnatal and Obsessive-compulsive Disorder have been updated with information on new maximum doses, adverse effects, and drug interactions for citalopram and escitalopram following the publication of new safety data regarding the association of with dose-dependent QT interval prolongation by Lundbeck Ltd, in collaboration with the MHRA.
• Diabetes – type 2 has been updated to include:
  • The MHRA warning on the interaction between systemic fusidic acid and statins.
  • Information on saxagliptin (Onglyza^®) and linagliptin (Trajenta^®), two new dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors licensed for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycaemic control.
  • Information on liraglutide (Victoza^®).
  • Information on fitness to drive from the DVLA’s guidance for medical practitioners, At a glance guide to the current medical standards of fitness to drive (2011).
  • A tabulated version of the treatment recommendations for blood glucose control, to aid navigation.
• HIV infection and AIDS has been updated to include information about the potentially serious interaction between proton pump inhibitors and protease inhibitors (atazanavir and saquinavir) from the BNF.

•  Adverse drug reactions – no changes to clinical recommendations have been made.
•  Angio-oedema and anaphylaxis – recommendations from the NICE guideline on Anaphylaxis: assessment to confirm an anaphylactic episode and the decision to refer after emergency treatment for a suspected anaphylactic episode (2011) have been included. In addition, the management section has been restructured to improve clarity and navigation.
• Bites – human and animal – no changes to clinical recommendations have been made.
• Urticaria – recommendations on managing people who have had an inadequate response to the standard licensed dose of antihistamine have been changed to include the option to double the standard licensed dose of the first choice antihistamine, before considering referral to secondary care for further management. In addition, the topic has been restructured to improve clarity and navigation.
