NHS Evidence coming April 2009

The below statement was issued from the National Library for Health earlier this year:

Earlier this year NICE and the NHS Institute were asked to feed into the Darzi ‘Next Stage Review’ report on how best to provide an innovative and accessible evidence service that will demonstrate real additional benefits for NHS staff and patients.

A joint proposal for the creation of a new NHS Evidence portal was submitted to the Department of Health in May and has now been accepted.

The Outcome:

The broad vision outlined in the proposal was accepted, with NICE leading the development of NHS Evidence and NLH transferring to NICE to form the core of NHS Evidence. Lord Darzi’s final report indicated that:

“All NHS staff will have access to a new NHS Evidence service where they will be able to get, through a single web-based portal, authoritative clinical and non-clinical evidence and best practice. “(p12)

“NICE will manage the synthesis and spread of knowledge through NHS Evidence – a new, single portal, through which anyone will be able to access clinical and non-clinical evidence and best practice, both what high quality care looks like and how to deliver it.” (p49)

NHS Evidence will be a new web-based portal that will provide authoritative clinical and non-clinical evidence and best practice on both what high quality care looks like and how to deliver it.

This is strong endorsement of NICE and the NLH and the confidence and trust we have worked hard to build in the NHS. We welcome the opportunity to bring together the expertise of both organisations to create a service which will be the first of its kind in the world.

NICE will manage the establishment of this service with expertise from the NLH, who will transfer into NICE to form the core of NHS Evidence.

Dr Gillian Leng, NICE Deputy Chief Executive and Implementation Director, will become the Chief Operation Office for NHS Evidence to oversee its development as well as the transfer of the NLH into NICE.

Between now and April 2009, when Phase One of NHS Evidence will be launched, NICE and NLH will initiate a transition project to manage the design of the new service. Transfer of NLH functions and its staff will be achieved following management change policies which will ensure their effective and fair integration into NICE.

We will keep all our stakeholders informed of the progress of this project with regular updates.
