Library Refurbishment Update – April 2012

April 24, 2012 at 9:37 am Leave a comment

A design team involving Library, Administration, Academic and NHS staff as well as Student representatives has finalised a design for the refurbishment of the silent study area.  Seating capacity in this area will be increased from 120 to over 200 study spaces in a modern, light and comfortable space.  This large area will be split into three distinct spaces with two large, glass partitions allowing for some flexibility in use.  Wifi will be available throughout the space and many desks will have access to power for laptop use.  Ventilation and lighting will be appropriate for numbers and use with many desks having task lighting to improve the comfort and usability of the spaces.

There will be a “quiet” zone with some comfortable seating, a selection of current print journals (e.g. BMJ, Lancet, Nursing Times etc) and a staffed enquiries desk.

We have consulted with the Disabilities Advisor to ensure that the design is DDA compliant and will be as user friendly as possible.

In order to generate space for the refurbishment a large proportion of our print journals stock will be stored in the University of London Depository Library at Egham.  A small number of titles will be returned to roller racking in the refurbished space once the work has been completed (those titles to which we have print access only).

Work in the Library will begin on 16th July 2012 and we hope to be able to have full access to the refurbished area by mid- October.
