Changes to NICE and NHS Evidence

In accordance with the Health and Social Care Act, on 1 April 2013, NICE became an executive non-departmental public body. From this date, in addition to their current role providing guidance to the NHS and the public health communities they also took on responsibility for developing quality standards and guidance for social care in England. To reflect these changes, from 1 April NICE became the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

This expansion of their remit provides an opportunity to apply an evidence-based system to decision-making in the social care sector, similar to that provided for the NHS. It also allows them to produce guidance and standards that promote better integration between health, public health and social care services.

As a result of these developments NHS Evidence will also be undergoing some stepped changes. From 1 April the web portal became known as ‘Evidence Search’ and carries the NICE logo in place of the NHS logo. However, the URL the same. They incorporated Evidence Search, BNF, a refreshed CKS service and their Journals and Database together as a collection of core evidence products under the new heading of NICE Evidence Services. Changes to explanatory text within the site will be made to reflect these changes which began to be made on 1 April.

There will be further updates during June and July 2013 to the look and feel of the site as NICE Evidence Services becomes more closely integrated with the main NICE website.

New Evidence Updates from NICE published

The latest NHS Evidence Updates have been published.

The new Evidence Updates focus on a summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical guideline 120 ‘Psychosis with coexisting substance misuse: assessment and management in adults and young people’ (2011) and a summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical guideline 122 ‘The recognition and initial management of ovarian cancer’ (2011).

A full list of published NICE Evidence Updates by dates is availble on their website.

NICE Evidence Updates help to reduce the need for individuals, managers and commissioners to search for new evidence, and keep health and social care professionals up-to-date with new research. While Evidence Updates do not replace current accredited guidance and do not provide formal recommendations, they do highlight new evidence that health and social care professionals may wish to consider alongside current guidance.
